One of our most popular classes, DPV/Scooter 1 is a unique class designed to teach the essential skills needed when operating diver propulsion vehicles (also called DPVs, or scooters) in recreational realms.
This is an excellent class, no matter which type of scooter you use, to learn not only how to correctly operate and control a scooter, but also how to repair and maintain your scooter.
In addition to simply sharing the fun of scootering, this class teaches the diver the foundational and critical aspects of scooter diving, increasing the diver's fun and efficiency, also reducing stress and diver risk while traveling at 180+ feet per minute.
This is not a critical skills class. Failures will not be introduced by the instructor in this class.
This class is designed for recreational/technical/cave divers interested in expanding their exploration of the underwater world while on the trigger control of a scooter. It focuses on the basic and foundational skills required for piloting a DPV, from basic control and manipulation to crash control, runaway scooter, OOG procedures and emergency exit procedures (towing, OOG, etc).
Those planning a vacation where the liveaboard or dive op require a DPV certification to rent a scooter, will have the necessary certification card.
DPVs are tremendous exploration tools, allowing divers to travel further than they ever could using only their fins, and lets face it, they're HUGE fun.
However, since the scooter can reach speeds of over 250 feet per minute (fpm), there is also considerable risk involved to the untrained DPV pilot. This course focuses on maximizing the scooter's full potential and the diver's enjoyment and efficiency, while also minimizing the diver's stress, risk and taskloading.
We start with scooter care and upkeep, as well as techniques for proper balance, weighting and towline adjustment.
Skills focus on improving diver proficiency and awareness while scootering, riding position, buoyancy control, scooter team communication, battery burntime management, dive light management, effective scooter risk evaluation and efficient dive planning.
Equal focus is also on contingencies and emergencies such as crash control, out of gas (OOG), runaway scooter, failed scooter and diver towing and exit procedures and options.
Students will then have at least 4 dives to work on gaining comfort, balance and awareness while scootering, as well as proper light management and team communication. We will then move to identifying and managing failures and contingencies, such as dead scooter/battery, out of gas while scootering, diver towing, crash control and runaway scooter.
We will "dry run" all skills. Dry runs allow the student to practice the skills on land under the watchful eye of the instructor(s), allowing them to practice and discuss the skill prior to performing them underwater.
This class is designed to provide a working knowledge on how to safely dive using a DPV.
Academic discussions include proper a thorough discussion of all components, care & upkeep, field repair, balancing and weighting the scooter, proper tow cord adjustment, battery burntime & management, team communications, basic scooter controls, contingencies, light management
Our diving days end with video review of the day's dives. All FKD classes are video'd for educational and review purposes only. We believe it is invaluable for students to visually focus on their individual in-water skills, situational awareness, communication and team diving. Learning to self evaluate is an important aspect of the class.
Our focus is the complete dedication to your diving skills, knowledge & in water practice.
